Once you had to photograph a subject because it existed.
Today you can generate a subject even though it never existed.
Artificial intelligence thereby changes one of the most fundamental questions in visual communication:
What still counts as a photograph?
The technical progress is impressive. Images can be generated, altered and combined. Places can appear that do not exist. People can do things that never happened.
And yet real photography does not automatically become obsolete.
Perhaps quite the opposite.
Because the easier it becomes to generate perfect images, the more valuable images become that document something that actually exists.
A person.
A place.
A product.
A moment.
That does not mean every brand image will have to be documentary in future. On the contrary: AI will open creative possibilities that classic photography could never have offered.
But the decision becomes more important.
What should I generate?
And: what should I show?
For brands, that is a fairly fundamental question.
Because images can create attention.
But reality can create trust.
And perhaps, in a world where every image is possible, that becomes one of the strongest arguments for a real one again.
